Hace más de treinta años, Luce Irigaray constató que si cada época tiene un tema que pensar, uno solamente, la diferencia sexual es el tema de nuestro tiempo. Pero qué es realmente el género? Qué es el sexo? Qué lugar ocupa la diferencia sexual en la conformación de nuestra identidad? Qué es lo queer? Quién es la mujer? Quién es el varón? Cómo se conjugan la diferencia y la igualdad? Son éstas las preguntas que la autora explora en esta obra, con el fin de ofrecer una aproximación al complejo panorama de los discursos sobre género que coexisten en nuestro tiempo.
La autora se embarca en el pensamiento de figuras como Margaret Mead, Simone de Beauvoir o Judith Butler para extraer un diagnóstico sobre las teorÃas de género que predominan actualmente, al tiempo que vislumbra y plantea otros horizontes desde los cuales es posible abordar esta cuestión. Su propuesta se desarrolla en torno a la problemática antropológica de la naturaleza y la cultura, desde la cual va mostrando los lÃmites y aciertos de algunas de estas posturas, para explorar, finalmente, nuevas perspectivas antropológicas que han planteado la cuestión de la condición sexuada en el marco ontológico de la persona.
