La FilosofÃa fundamental fue escrita a principios del año 1845. Para su realización Jaime Balmes viajó a ParÃs el 25 de abril de ese año. Durante cinco meses visitó bibliotecas para profundizar en las nuevas corrientes alemanas y francesas, a la vez que leÃa autores escolásticos.
El 24 de noviembre Balmes y Brusi firmaron el contrato para la primera edición de la FilosofÃa fundamental. Esta obra estudia las bases o fundamentos de un modo de pensar. Se propone ofrecer una estructura sustentadora de un pensamiento que sea consistente y pueda dar razón de las cuestiones filosóficas que a todos nos inquietan y esperan una respuesta satisfactoria.
Los fines que se propone Balmes al escribir la FilosofÃa fundamental son tres:
un fin apologético,
un fin patriótico
y un fin cientÃfico.
Apologéticamente Balmes se propone exponer las materias filosóficas con espÃritu cristiano, en consonancia con las doctrinas de la Iglesia. Patrióticamente, quiere actualizar la filosofÃa española -atrasada respecto a las nuevas corrientes extranjeras- con un pensamiento propiamente español. Y cientÃficamente quiere dejar estas cuestiones suficientemente resueltas y de manera tan firme, que no solamente se mantengan como verdaderas, sino que demuestren falsos los errores de otras filosofÃas contrarias.
No me lisonjeo de fundar una filosofÃa, pero me propongo examinar sus cuestiones fundamentales; por eso llamo a la obra: FilosofÃa fundamental. Me ha impulsado a publicarla el deseo de contribuir a que los estudios filosóficos adquieran en España mayor amplitud de la que tienen en la actualidad, y de prevenir, en cuanto alcancen mis débiles fuerzas, un grave peligro que nos amenaza, el de introducÃrsenos una filosofÃa plagada de errores trascendentales... Tamaña calamidad solo puede precaverse con estudios sólidos y bien dirigidos; en nuestra época el mal no se contiene con la sola represión; es necesario ahogarle con la abundancia del bien. La presente obra, podrá conducir a este objeto? El público lo ha de juzgar.
