Para combatir lo que John Stuart Mili consideraba un freno al progreso de la humanidad, publicó en 1869 su emblemática obra La esclavitud femenina. En ella recogió propuestas igualitaristas de carácter innovador (igualdad y libertad, mejora en la educación, sufragio,
revisión de la legislación matrimonial...) y crÃticas demoledoras a la situación vigente. Sin embargo, Mill también sucumbió a algunos elementos conservadores tÃpicamente victorianos.
En este ensayo, Mill argumenta que la esclavitud femenina es una forma de opresión que impide el desarrollo social y la igualdad de género. Mill sostiene que la discriminación basada en el género es injusta y que las mujeres tienen derecho a los mismos derechos y libertades que los hombres.
En La esclavitud femenina, Mill examina las raÃces de la opresión de las mujeres y argumenta que la discriminación de género es una forma de control social que limita el potencial de las mujeres. En su lugar, propone una sociedad en la que hombres y mujeres tengan igualdad de derechos y oportunidades. Este ensayo ha sido ampliamente reconocido como un hito en la historia del feminismo y ha tenido un impacto significativo en el pensamiento polÃtico y social.
No puede, en rigor, la educación actual de la mujer llamarse educación, sino doma, pues se propone por fin la obediencia, la pasividad y la sumisión.
