Daniel Branco (Fortaleza, Brasil, 1985), doctorante en filosofía y especialista en la historia de Brasil, nos ofrece en esta obra, totalmente novedosa en lengua castellana, un estudio en torno a la crítica de Emil Cioran sobre la idea del progreso histórico en el mundo moderno. Mediante un análisis minucioso de las principales obras del autor franco-rumano, Branco traza una visión brillante y precisa del siempre complejo y enigmático Cioran.
Huyendo de todos los paradigmas dominantes, y frente a las tendencias progresistas de la ideología moderna, considera que las distintas civilizaciones y eras no representan ningún progreso en el devenir histórico, y que la esencia de éste es invariable, sin posibilidad de cambio. La propia filosofía moderna es incapaz de captar esa esencia caída y la propia irreversibilidad de la misma.
El autor nos muestra el transfondo de la filosofía cioraniana, enfrentada al cambio, al progreso y a las utopías. Solamente le queda su propia lucidez como último refugio, estéril ante la tragicidad de la historia.
