Se conservan media docena de piezas teatrales de Luis Belmonte Bermúdez; la más celebrada es El diablo predicador, y mayor contrario amigo. Apareció como escrito anónimo por el desenfado y libertad de algunos caracteres, y solo tuvo problemas con la censura muchos años después.
Los contemporáneos de Belmonte vieron en ella una exaltación de la orden franciscana y de la práctica de la caridad. Sin embargo después se entendió como una crÃtica anticlerical a causa de su gran personaje cómico, el lego fray AntolÃn.
Hacia el final de la obra El diablo predicador San Miguel castiga al demonio Luzbel. Se le acusa de hacer pasar hambre a una comunidad franciscana. Y para redimirse tiene que pedir limosna para ellos mientras se transforma en predicador.
