Este libro, como todas sus publicaciones, da cuenta del precioso trabajo que realizan allà investigadores y estudiantes, con un ojo puesto en el avance del conocimiento y el otro dirigido a un público atento e inquieto por saber más acerca de neurociencias y de cómo estas no se encuentran volando lejos, sino muy cerca de nuestras preocupaciones más básicas como especie.
Son relatos breves y diversos, atingentes a cuán inteligentes pudieron ser los dinosaurios, si es o no posible revivir el cerebro, a las neuronas de la sed y la frecuencia de la picazón, contagios a las neuronas que nacen en el cerebro de un adulto, a la posibilidad de crear neuronas, a la sensibilidad de las plantas, a lo que tienen en común los mosquitos y los telescopios, a las modificaciones cerebrales que pueden causar los celulares, a cómo ataca al cerebro el coronavirus, a la hormona que hace retroceder el deterioro mental y al reloj cerebral que controla la agresividad.
Este libro, DeMente. Dos cabezas piensan más que una, trata precisamente de eso: de la mente y del cuerpo que la hacen posible a la vez que reconocible. Se suma a la abundante bibliografÃa producto de esfuerzos de divulgación de un saber -la neurociencia o los saberes neurociencias- que no dejan pasar un solo dÃa sin asombrarnos con sus avances y sorprendentes tecnologÃas, produciéndonos tanta fascinación como inquietud. No hay que creer necesariamente en el relato del Génesis para manifestarse de acuerdo con esta reflexión del teólogo jesuita Henrie Lubac: si Dios descansa en el séptimo dÃa, ello fue porque alguien tendrÃa que ocuparse del resto. Sabemos bien quién es ese alguien: la inteligencia humana que conformamos y que, sin ánimo de parecerse a una divinidad ni menos de suplantarla, se obstina en conocer y en conocerse a sà misma.
