La dama boba relata la historia de Finea, una niña rica que se niega a madurar. Todos a su alrededor la creen tonta. Sin embargo, un dÃa, la supuesta dama boba se enamora de Lorenzo y entonces pone de manifiesto toda su cordura y su sensatez. En esta obra, Lope intenta escenificar una idea filosófica neoplatónica: el amor que educa y refina a las personas.
La dama boba pone de manifiesto el papel de la mujer en la sociedad y las dificultades que tiene para seguir el camino que ella ha elegido; lo cual la vuelve, a pesar del tiempo, increÃblemente actual.
Aquà Lope de Vega usa la simplicidad para explorar el tema del amor en sus diferentes facetas, pero simplificando los tipos de personajes y utilizando solo los imprescindibles. Por ejemplo, no habla de otras mujeres que no sean las hermanas y sus respectivas criadas.
Respecto a los hombres, solo incluye a los pretendientes y a un criado por cada uno. A través de cada personaje trata un aspecto diferente del amor.
Cabe finalmente destacar también en esta obra la irónica alusión a Juan Latino.
