These Sentimental Tales are satirical portraits of characters living on the margins of Soviet society in the decade following the Bolshevik Revolution. Told by Kolenkorov, a thoroughly unmodel Soviet narrator--nostalgic for the old regime and a clumsy writer at best--the stories deliberately adopt an awkward prose style filled with clichés, tortured metaphors, and misused bureaucratic jargon. Beneath this comic and unreliable voice, Zoshchenko crafts unexpectedly moving stories of unrequited love and small emotional misfortunes, set in rundown apartments and modest lives. A sharp, original, and irresistably funny look at Soviet society in the 1920s.
