Cómo debo vivir?
Hay preguntas que podemos evitar durante años. Esta no es una de ellas.
Cada decisión que tomamos -una relación que comenzamos o terminamos, un trabajo que aceptamos, una verdad que decimos, un silencio que guardamos- expresa, de alguna manera, una respuesta acerca de cómo creemos que debemos vivir.
Pero antes de preguntarnos qué debemos hacer, este libro propone una pregunta anterior:
Cómo llegamos a convertirnos en la persona que observa, comprende y decide de la manera en que lo hace?
No nacemos viendo el mundo como lo vemos hoy. Aprendemos a distinguir. Aprendemos qué considerar importante, qué ignorar, qué temer, qué valorar y qué posibilidades reconocer. Cada experiencia puede incorporar nuevas distinciones; esas distinciones pueden reorganizar nuestra manera de observar; y cuando cambia el observador, también cambian las acciones que puede imaginar y realizar.
Desde esa idea, CÓMO DEBO VIVIR? desarrolla una teorÃa filosófica de la formación humana y recorre algunas de las preguntas que aparecen cuando intentamos comprender cómo llegamos a ser quienes somos:
Qué significa conocer algo?
Qué diferencia existe entre recibir información y transformarse?
Hasta qué punto somos libres si decidimos desde una historia que no elegimos?
Qué ocurre cuando confundimos nuestra manera de observar con la realidad misma?
Podemos transformar deliberadamente al observador que somos?
Y qué significa, desde allÃ, aprender a vivir?
El recorrido conduce desde la experiencia y el conocimiento hasta la identidad, la libertad, la verdad, los lÃmites del observador y la posibilidad de continuar transformándonos.
Pero este no es un libro de recetas.
No encontrarás una lista de mandamientos, una fórmula para alcanzar la felicidad ni una definición universal de la vida correcta. Tampoco una escala destinada a decidir quién está más o menos desarrollado.
La propuesta es diferente.
Si nuestra manera de vivir depende, al menos en parte, de aquello que somos capaces de distinguir, entonces quizá una de las preguntas fundamentales no sea solamente qué debo hacer, sino también:
En qué clase de observador necesito convertirme para poder reconocer posibilidades que hoy todavÃa no puedo ver?
Desde allà aparece una respuesta posible a la pregunta que da tÃtulo al libro: vivir no consiste en alcanzar un estado definitivo desde el cual ya no tengamos nada que aprender. Consiste también en conservar las condiciones que hacen posible nuestra formación.
Vivir de manera que aquello que hoy somos no se convierta innecesariamente en el lÃmite de aquello que mañana podremos comprender.
Porque quizá una vida plenamente humana no sea aquella que finalmente encuentra todas las respuestas, sino aquella que conserva abierta la posibilidad de seguir preguntando, distinguiendo, aprendiendo y transformándose.
