La cautiva, del argentino Esteban EcheverrÃa, es un relato sobre las relaciones entre aborÃgenes y blancos fruto de la Argentina del siglo XIX. Dos amantes apresados por los indios emprenden una huida desesperada a través del desierto. El relato oscila, con esquizofrenia colonial, entre una defensa a ultranza del honor cristiano y una cierta fascinación distante por el modo de vida de los indios.
Este asunto literario de la convivencia indios y blancos tiene en La cautiva su propia solución. Sin embargo, cabe señalar que otras obras de la época como Tabaré y Caramurú también se ocupan también del tema.
