A finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, Viena era la capital cultural de Europa. En esta ciudad se produjeron notables progresos en todos los campos del saber humano y se originó el movimiento psicoanalÃtico de Sigmund Freud.
En su juventud, Hans Kelsen acudió a las tertulias ofrecidas por el padre del psicoanálisis. Más aún, dictarÃa algunas conferencias durante estas reuniones.
En 1933 se publicó la primera versión de Amor platónico bajo el tÃtulo de Die platonische Liebe I en Imago, revista editada por Sigmund Freud. Nueve años más tarde, tras la llegada de Hans Kelsen a Estados Unidos de América huyendo de la Alemania nazi, apareció una segunda versión con el tÃtulo de Platonic Love. A diferencia del primer texto, que solo contenÃa el ensayo Eros, el jurista de Viena añadirÃa el artÃculo Cratos. Esta serÃa la versión definitiva que se traducirÃa, también, al italiano y ahora al castellano.
En Amor platónico, Kelsen trata, por una parte, y explicar la estructura psÃquica de Platón a través del psicoanálisis y, por la otra, de demostrar sus afirmaciones por medio de los vestigios documentales que se conservan. En este ensayo, Hans Kelsen afirma que el filósofo griego era vÃctima de su Eros homosexual. Sus pulsiones y contradicciones le condujeron a imponerse la tarea de transformar a la sociedad a través de la educación, desarrollando una propuesta filosófica. Para legitimar su modelo, afirmó que los filósofos son las mejores personas para gobernar porque eran poseedores de la máxima virtud: el conocimiento.
