Amor, honor y poder es la primera comedia atribuida con certeza a Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Se estrenó en Madrid, en el viejo Alcázar, el 29 de junio de 1623, por la compañÃa de Juan Acacio Bernal. Fue durante estancia en Madrid del prÃncipe de Gales, Carlos Estuardo.
La obra contiene en el tÃtulo los tres ejes fundamentales de la acción, y se basa en la historia ejemplar titulada Cómo Eduardo III, rey de Inglaterra, se enamoró de la condesa Salveric y cómo después de haberla seguido por muchas vÃas, se vino a casar con ella. Calderón va más allá y construye unos personajes memorables.
Amor, honor y poder empieza con Estela confinada en el castillo de Salveric a salvo de las intrigas de la corte y del mundo terrenal. Allà aparece la Infanta Flérida, hermana del rey Eduardo III de Inglaterra. Casi muere despeñada a causa de su caballo desbocado. Sin embargo, es salvada por Enrico hermano de Estela, hijo del Conde de Salverie.
Eduardo III se alegra de la salvación de la Infanta y se siente atraÃdo a su vez por Estela, dando inicio al conflicto esencial de Amor, honor y poder.
