Southerners are known for their hospitality and I never want that tradition to end. I always bring a hostess gift anytime I am invited to someone's home. My husband used to tell me we got invited to so many parties for my hostess gifts. Tailor the gift to something your host or hostess loves. Giving a small gift for no reason is a lost tradition that should be revived. It brings a smile to everyone and is a kind gesture. Even if I am just stopping by to visit, I always bring something as a gift. The gift doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming, but it should be something that shows you care.
Candy, cookies, cakes, jars of sauces or homemade mixes are always a hit. I love to receive food gifts. It is one less thing I have to cook and it shows how much the person cares by giving a personal gift. Snack mixes are also very popular. I like to give gift baskets of dips, spreads, homemade breads or crackers. If you love southern pound cakes, cookies and candies, this book is full of all the southern favorites.
If someone is sick, there is a death in the family or they just need a home cooked meal, I usually take a homemade soup with homemade bread or sandwiches. Everyone brings casseroles but I find they enjoy homemade soups and sandwiches more than the casseroles. Homemade breads with flavored butters are always a great idea. These recipes are not just for gifts, your family will appreciate them as well.
