South of Soledad is the story of Gene Carter, the son of migrant workers who moved from the Dust Bowl and settled in California's Salinas Valley where Dad is the sole employee on a hardscrabble farm. Gene Carter and his best friend, Arturo, search for treasure, convert the family sedan into a hot rod, almost get killed by a bull, and enthusiastically explore the Salinas Valley and Los Padres National Forest. It is fun and games until a murderer escapes from Soledad State Prison and shows up at the farm in the middle of the night where Gene Carter is the only one who hears him.
