Seventeen composers who changed how we listen. Seventeen manifestos for a more creative life.
From Hildegard von Bingen's visions in a twelfth-century abbey to Ryoji Ikeda's pulses of pure data, Soundscape Your Life is a journey through nine centuries of music that dared to sound different.
Pianist and sound artist Tania Chen introduces the visionaries who reimagined what music could be: Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, Éliane Radigue and her slowly unfolding drones, Satie, Scriabin, Webern, Varèse, Cage, Feldman, Ornette Coleman, Wendy Carlos, Yoko Ono, Kate Bush and more.
Every chapter closes with a manifesto that turns the composer's ideas into ways you can live more creatively, enrich your everyday life and see the world anew. The final chapter turns the lens on the author herself. Drawing on more than 25 years as a performer and improviser, Tania shares how these radical ideas live in her own practice, and closes with a manifesto of her own.
Inside you'll discover:
- The stories of 17 visionary composers and sound artists
- A manifesto at the end of every chapter to put their ideas into practice
- A Further Listening guide to begin your own soundscape
For dreamers, creatives and seekers, and anyone who has felt a piece of music change the way they see the world.
