I found this book to be entertaining and a good read. This is the quality book that we have come to expect from Pelican Publishing and author Gary C. Walker.
--Ed Porter, The Lone Star E-Newsletter
Born in Civil War-era Virginia, Joe Fowler witnesses the slow decline of the Old South and the ravages of the war on his home, family, and way of life.
Raised by his aunt and his stern, aristocratic father, Joe struggles to be the man his family wants him to be-a proud, well-bred Southerner who will one day own a plantation. However, Joe has problems learning. While he understands math, he is unable to read or write, and he is forced to work with the slaves while his brothers and sister become educated.
When Joe realizes that the wealth of the plantation will not go to him, he leaves his family and makes a new life for himself in the changing South. He marries a beautiful Southern belle and spikes the ire of his family. Torn between what he wants and his obligations to others, Joe eventually finds what he is looking for-a modest wealth, a loving family, and the passionate calling to fight in the war.
