The Somnambulist and the Detective by Allan Pinkerton is a gripping detective story that delves into the mysterious murder of George Gordon, a young and promising bank teller in Atkinson, Mississippi. The narrative begins with Pinkerton, a renowned detective, being summoned to solve the perplexing case that has baffled local authorities and other detectives. Gordon was found brutally murdered in the bank, with a significant sum of money missing. The investigation reveals that Gordon was a cautious and diligent employee, making it unlikely that he would have allowed a stranger into the bank after hours. Pinkerton's inquiry leads him to suspect that the murderer was someone Gordon knew and trusted. As he pieces together the evidence, Pinkerton uncovers a series of clues, including a partially burned note and a blood-stained piece of paper with figures that suggest a financial transaction. These clues point to Alexander P. Drysdale, a respected county clerk and a close friend of Gordon's, as the prime suspect. Pinkerton's methodical approach and keen observation skills allow him to reconstruct the events leading to the murder, revealing a tale of desperation and betrayal. The story highlights Pinkerton's expertise in solving complex cases and his ability to see beyond the obvious, ultimately bringing justice to the victim and closure to the community.
