The story follows John Whitefeather, a skilled young hunter who lives in the village of White River. During a harsh winter, an elder named Makwa warns of the Snow Snake, a spiritual creature that feeds not on flesh-but on a person's warmth, memory, and connection to others. John dismisses the warning as superstition.
While leading a hunting party, John and his companions discover unnaturally warm tracks in the snow, a sign of the creature. When they investigate, a member of the group, Eli, is suddenly dragged beneath the snow by something unseen. John and Thomas follow the trail to a cave and encounter the Snow Snake-an immense, supernatural serpent that traps souls within itself.
They learn that weapons cannot harm it. With Makwa's guidance, John uses cedar ash to repel and temporarily bind the creature, but Eli remains trapped inside, neither fully alive nor dead. John keeps the truth mostly hidden from the village to protect them from fear, though this silence leaves future generations unprepared.
Years later, John's grandson Aaron faces a new wave of disappearances. Discovering the truth John never fully shared, Aaron confronts the Snow Snake himself. Inside the cave, he learns the creature grows stronger when people and their stories are forgotten.
Instead of trying to destroy it, Aaron returns to the village and leads the people in remembering and speaking the names of the lost. This collective memory weakens the creature. With cedar ash and the power of remembrance, Aaron and the villagers bind the Snow Snake again, preventing it from feeding unchecked.
The story ends with a powerful lesson:
The creature thrives on forgotten people, but memory-spoken truth, shared stories, and honoring the lost-is what keeps it contained.
