The Slow Hello is the third book in Gerry's Campfire Adventures, a ten-book Australian bedtime picture book series for children aged 3 to 7.
At the waterhole at dusk, Gerry the Giraffe is doing what he loves most. Kicking pebbles into the still water and watching the ripples spread. He is not expecting company. But in the reeds, something moves. A very small tortoise named Toby has been watching for a while. He wants to join in. He just does not know how.
What follows is not a grand adventure. It is something quieter and more lasting. A wave and a freeze. A pebble nudged slowly across the ground. A smile that takes a little while to arrive. And two very different creatures finding their way to each other, one careful step at a time.
I made this book because I have watched my own kids sit with that in-between feeling. The wanting to connect but not quite finding the words. The relief of being met with patience instead of pressure. Gerry does not rush Toby. He simply waits, warmly, for as long as it takes. And in doing so he shows something that is easier to feel than to explain: that patience is one of the kindest things you can offer someone.
Written for the bedtime hour, The Slow Hello features warm Australian outback illustrations, a sing-along song page, and a set of gentle activity pages at the back. It pairs with the animated read-along episode on the One More Story channel, where Mr. H reads each story beside the campfire with Gerry close by.
