In 1610 a middle-aged mathematics professor with money troubles pointed a homemade tube at the night sky and saw mountains on the Moon. Within two years he had overturned the architecture of the heavens. Within twenty-three he was on his knees in a Roman hall, reciting a confession he did not believe.
The Sky Revealed tells the life of Galileo Galilei as the story of a problem that has never been solved: how a person comes to see what is actually in front of them, and what it costs to persuade anybody else. It is a book about lunar shadows and lens grinding, about a Venetian workshop that turned out military compasses for cash, about two daughters placed in a convent because their father could not afford dowries, and about the slow, grinding, entirely human machinery by which a correct idea is refused.
It is also a book that declines the comfortable version. The men who worked hardest to destroy Galileo were not priests but professors. The best argument against him was not theological but observational, and it was a good argument that stood unanswered for two centuries. His own decisive proof of the Earth's motion was wrong. He rejected the correct theory of planetary orbits when its author wrote to him personally, and he mocked the correct theory of the tides as astrology.
From the lutenist's workshop in Florence to the blind old man at Arcetri smuggling his finest book out to a Dutch printer, this is Galileo without the plaster saint. The closing chapters carry his problem into the present, where nobody is burned, everything is published, and the scarce resource is no longer the printing press but the attention of a reader who has ninety-nine other papers to skim before lunch.
