Given another chance to pursue his controversial experiments while serving as manager of Duque's new chemical plant, Varela quietly resumes the work that cost him his standing in the scientific community. Failure after failure follows, until six Goliath birdeaters finally offer the possibility of something extraordinary.

Years pass before Sandra's search for answers about the illnesses devastating Duque leads her to an investigative reporter. Hoping to draw attention to the town's plight, he combines the contamination investigation with a human-interest story about Adrián and the six remarkable spiders that have become his fiercely protective companions.
