Signa is a novel written by the English author Ouida, originally published in 1875. The story follows the life of a young Italian girl named Signa, who grows up in a small village in Tuscany with her mother, a beautiful but vain woman who is more concerned with her own appearance than with her daughter's well-being. Signa is a talented musician and singer, and her gift is recognized by a wealthy Englishman named Sir Jasper Leigh, who takes her under his wing and brings her to England to be educated and trained as a professional singer. In England, Signa falls in love with Sir Jasper's son, Brian, who is engaged to another woman. Signa's heartbreak and disillusionment lead her to make some questionable choices, including a brief affair with a wealthy older man and a stint as a performer in a seedy music hall. Eventually, Signa returns to Italy, where she finds solace in her music and in the love of a kind and gentle man named Bruno.Signa is a vividly written novel that explores themes of love, betrayal, and the search for identity. Ouida's descriptions of the Tuscan countryside and the London music scene are rich and evocative, and her characters are complex and multi-dimensional. The novel is a timeless tale of a young woman's journey to find her place in the world and to discover the true meaning of love and happiness. It was not probable. He knew the touch of a dead thing, and she had felt to him dead as any slaughtered sheep could be. But sometimes, in the long lonely nights of autumn, when he sat watching his grapes, with the gun against his knee, lest thieves should strip the vines, Bruno would think of it, and say to himself--If she were not really dead, what was I?This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
