The Shrinking Horizon
Foreknowledge and the Collapse of Human Agency
by Ryszard Nowosielski
What if every step forward in prediction was a step backward in freedom?
This bold and elegantly argued book explores a growing paradox of modern systems: the more accurately we foresee the future, the less space remains for true action. From drone warfare and financial markets to neuroscience and algorithmic law, predictive architectures are beginning to act for us - or through us.
The Shrinking Horizon is the fourth volume in Nowosielski's philosophical series, following his trilogy on human economic value. Here, he moves from the logic of worth to the structure of will, asking how freedom can survive in systems designed to anticipate and preempt our every move.
Across war rooms, courtrooms, trading desks, and neural circuits, Nowosielski reveals a disturbing pattern: decision is vanishing before our eyes. But he also points to hidden spaces of resistance - ambiguity, creativity, and unpredictability - where action may still survive.
This is not a dystopia. It is a map of the threshold where human freedom ends - and where it might begin again.
What You Will Find Inside:
- A powerful model explaining how foresight narrows freedom
- Examples from military systems, finance, neuroscience, and law
- A final chapter on ethics, illegibility, and the defense of human agency
- A curated bibliography of 25 essential works in theory and systems thinking
