Shamela is a satirical novel written by the British author Henry Fielding, first published in 1741. The book is a parody of Samuel Richardson's novel Pamela, which was a popular novel at the time. In Shamela, Fielding takes on the character of Pamela and turns her into a cunning and manipulative woman who uses her sexuality to gain power and wealth. The novel is written in the form of letters between characters, and it follows the story of Shamela as she attempts to seduce her employer, Mr. Booby, and marry him for his money.Fielding uses Shamela to criticize the conventions of the popular novels of his time, which often portrayed women as virtuous and submissive.
