Every great prank starts with a victim who doesn't know they're the joke.
For seventeen-year-old Leo Maxwell, attention is a drug. Known to his 847,000 followers as @ThePrankGod, Leo has spent years filling a hollow, broken space in his life with the golden glow of social media validation. To him, the cruelty of a well-executed prank is just comedy. It's just craft.
Until the day a high school cafeteria prank goes horribly right-and something else starts watching.
It begins with an impossible distortion in the background of his viral footage: a figure in a suit with a smile that defies human anatomy. Then comes the static in his teeth, the bleeding walls, and a creeping, ambient madness known as the Giggle Veil that begins to colonize his hometown.
With the help of his brilliant, skeptical channel manager Maya and his anxiety-driven tech-genius best friend Josh, Leo uncovers a terrifying truth: he has been targeted as an active conduit for The Serious-an ancient, predatory entity made of concentrated human cruelty that feeds on collective attention. And a shadowy government cleanup crew, Project Meridian Laugh, is already closing in with a protocol for containment that doesn't include saving Leo's life.
As reality itself begins to fray, the entity offers Leo the ultimate temptation: the attention of millions and the power of a god. To sever the connection and save everyone around him, Leo must face a terrifying ultimatum. He doesn't just have to stop the broadcast. He has to kill the one thing he relies on to exist: the desperate desire to be watched.
Why so serious, Leo? The joke is just beginning.
The Serious is a gripping, modern psychological thriller that explores the dark calculus of internet fame, the weight of accountability, and the fragile reality hidden beneath the performance of a lifetime.
