A collected selection of poems by Oscar Wilde presenting the range of his poetic work from early compositions to later reflective pieces. This volume brings together seventeen poems, including The Ballad of Reading Gaol, Ave Imperatrix, Magdalen Walks, The Harlot's House, and Flower of Love, offering a representative view of Wilde's development as a poet.
The poems proceed across differing modes and subjects, from classical and historical themes to personal and contemplative reflection. Wilde's method emphasizes form, rhythm, and tonal control, with attention to both lyrical expression and structured composition. The collection allows for a continuous reading of his poetic voice, tracing shifts in emphasis while maintaining stylistic coherence.
Positioned within English literature, Wilde's poetry reflects both aesthetic tradition and individual expression. The inclusion of The Ballad of Reading Gaol, written following his imprisonment, provides a later perspective that contrasts with the earlier work, contributing to the breadth of the collection.
