This installment of the Secler Space Odyssey continues the surreal and darkly humorous journey of Captain Bendegúz Kovács aboard the ESS Spacebarrow. As the crew approaches the massive black hole Gaia BH1, the narrative blends cosmic horror with the grounded, often absurd, traditions of Secler life.
Plot Overview
The story begins with a miraculous and confusing reunion: Bendegúz's father, István Kovács, literally knocks on the ship's airlock after being lost in space. Far from a sentimental homecoming, the elder Kovács brings with him a penchant for pálinka, a stubborn refusal to follow modern protocols, and the shocking revelation that Bendegúz's mother is still trapped on another ship across a dimensional gate.
Guided by the supernatural intuitions of the young Jancsi Star-a child who functions as a literal cosmic compass-the crew navigates through a series of increasingly bizarre encounters:
The Rescue of French Jóska: A boarding mission to a derelict French freighter results in the rescue of a legionnaire-turned-cook and a brutal battle with three-headed space lizards.
The Guardian of the Gate: As they reach the event horizon, a mysterious entity named Sándor appears, demanding philosophical answers and a specific scone baked in embers before allowing the ship to pass.
Themes and Tone
The work maintains a unique folk-sci-fi atmosphere. It juxtaposes high-concept physics-like spiral-shaped universes and event horizons-with the mundane realities of brewing mash in engineering, eating Nutella with a talking bear named Buci, and father-son squabbles in the ship's latrines.
As Bendegúz struggles to maintain his authority against his father's old-school captaincy, the story explores themes of family legacy, the limits of human survival, and the idea that time may be a loop rather than a straight line.
Secler Space Odyssey IV is a chaotic, alcohol-soaked, and imaginative journey to the edge of the universe, where the only thing more dangerous than a black hole is a stubborn Secler parent.
