Before love, before language, before the invention of taxes, there was fear. It's the reason our ancestors survived long enough to invent both hope and sarcasm. Fear kept us from hugging tigers, poking snakes, and exploring dark caves without backup. It's the oldest survival app in the mammalian operating system - impossible to uninstall, occasionally helpful, and constantly sending false notifications.
Fear is biology's way of saying, Don't do that again, even when that is just checking your credit score. It's not a flaw in the design - it is the design. The fight-or-flight response, honed over millions of years, works beautifully in the savannah and terribly in traffic. Our nervous system still can't tell the difference between a predator and an email marked urgent.
We evolved to overreact. The anxious survived because they jumped first and asked questions never. Fear made us creative, social, and occasionally paranoid - the perfect cocktail for civilization. Every great invention, from fire to philosophy, started with someone being afraid of something else: darkness, hunger, mortality, silence. Fear built the species, then started charging rent.
