Ed and his young son Rye begin their journey grounded in something simple: learning how to live together in the wild. From clumsy attempts at bowhunting on public land in Oklahoma to silent, intimate lessons at a lakeside camp, their relationship is built through shared experience rather than conversation. Ed teaches through demonstration; Rye learns through observation. Words are scarce, but meaning is constant.
In Colorado's historic Chautauqua cabins, a formative moment unfolds when Rye, alone in a shaded greenbelt, kills a rabbit with a stone-an impulsive, unrefined act that leaves the animal suffering. When Ed finds him, he quickly ends the rabbit's life, then brings Rye inside and, without judgment or lecture, teaches him how to properly process the animal for food. What follows is not punishment, but instruction-transforming a moment of shock into one of understanding. It is Rye's first real confrontation with death, responsibility, and the quiet ethics of survival.
As they continue west in an aging camper van, the tone begins to shift. The world grows quieter. Gas stations are abandoned. Highways empty. Signs of disruption appear, but never fully explain themselves. By the time they arrive in Yellowstone National Park, the absence of people is impossible to ignore. The park remains eerily intact-staff still present, systems still functioning-but stripped of its crowds, it feels staged, suspended.
Inside the park, nature reasserts itself. Bison roam freely. Trails stretch empty. Warning signs feel less like guidance and more like prophecy. When Ed and Rye discover the remains of animals near Old Faithful, the boundary between observer and participant collapses. A massive black bear begins to track them-not with frantic aggression, but with calculated patience.
Rye, using a trail camera app and instinct sharpened by Ed's teachings, identifies the bear's behavioral pattern. While Ed searches for escape routes, Rye studies. Learns. Anticipates. Their eventual escape is not driven by force, but by understanding-timing their movements within the predator's routine.
Leaving Yellowstone, they head east into an increasingly unfamiliar version of America. The silence of the natural world gives way to something more ambiguous-human presence that feels altered, territorial. A roadside encounter with an armed man near a remote trailer escalates into a quiet but violent confrontation. In a pivotal moment, Rye acts-decisively and instinctively-using the very skills Ed has been teaching him.
The threat ends quickly. The consequences do not.
By the final pages, the balance between father and son has shifted. Ed, once the steady guide, is left shaken-confronted by the reality of what his son has become capable of. Rye, once uncertain and reactive, emerges composed, observant, and transformed. The road continues east, but the journey between them has fundamentally changed.
Run Rabbit Run explores themes of masculinity, mentorship, survival, and the loss of innocence through a restrained, cinematic lens. Dialogue is sparse; meaning is carried through action, gesture, and silence.
