Rituel Des Théophilantropes... documents the rituals of the Theophilanthropic Society, a deistic religious movement that emerged during the French Revolution. Founded in the late 1790s, Théophilanthropie sought to establish a rational and civic-minded religion, distinct from both traditional Catholicism and atheism. This historical document offers insight into the beliefs and practices of this unique religious experiment, shedding light on the intellectual and social currents of post-revolutionary France.
Written by Jean Baptiste Chemin-Dupontès, a prominent figure within the movement, this text provides a detailed account of Theophilanthropic ceremonies, moral teachings, and societal aspirations. It serves as a valuable primary source for understanding the religious landscape of the era and the broader quest for religious and social reform during a period of profound upheaval.
