Three hundred years ago life itself had accumulated many enemies from sources unimaginable in the twenty-first century. The Big Thicket of Texas is where our forefathers selected land as our dwelling place. The named locations are the same as they were 300 years ago. The ancestors of our family are buried in many of the graveyards throughout the Big Thicket.
The pains and plagues suffered by our forefathers are true. Settling in Texas was not an easy matter. It was an effort that was put forth by people of character and determination because they had no other choice such as returning to a location from where they came.
Our family ancestors were numbered among the original 300 that was granted land from the Republic of Texas. Also, others of our ancestors received land grants for service in the war against Mexico for the eventual State of Texas.
We hope the reader will enjoy our journey back in time as much as we did. Our hope is others who can claim ancestors back to the beginning of Texas will consider doing as we did, by using the knowledge of some of their present-day family events to be placed in a previous period to form the beginnings of becoming original Texans.
