Prologue - A Recipe for Disaster
Paris kept its restaurants the way it kept its churches: reverently, expensively, and with a quiet understanding that most of them would eventually need saving.
Henri LeMore had stopped believing in miracles roughly the same year he'd stopped believing his accountant's optimism, but he still opened the restaurant himself every morning at six, alone, before any of the staff arrived, because some habits survive long after the reasons for them have gone bankrupt. He walked the dining room the way a sailor walks a ship he suspects is taking on water - checking the corners, running a thumb along the brass, pretending the creak in the third floorboard from the door was structural rather than symbolic.
Seventy years of LeMore hung on the walls in black and white: his grandfather shaking hands with a president who no longer had a country; his father laughing beside a film star who no longer had a career; Henri himself, decades younger, beaming beside a Michelin inspector he'd been too naive to recognise until the review arrived. The photographs did not care that the tables beneath them now sat empty four nights out of seven. Photographs never do.
Two streets away, behind hoardings the colour of a coffin, workmen were finishing the interior of a restaurant that did not yet have a dining room but already had an opinion of itself. The sign above the door, when it finally went up, would read only ÉCLAIR, in gold letters cut with the confidence of a man who had never once doubted that Paris was waiting for him specifically.
Across the Atlantic, in a television studio smelling of hot lights and reheated coffee, a chef named Frederick LeMore delivered his four hundred and twelfth episode of easy weeknight cooking to a camera that loved him more reliably than his own conscience did. He smiled through the closing segment, thanked the crew, and sat alone afterward in his dressing room with his father's most recent phone call still playing in his head - the careful, deliberately unworried tone Henri used exclusively for delivering catastrophic news.
And in a narrow flat above a bookshop on a street nobody photographed, a woman with silver hair and steady hands finished editing a photograph until the shadow fell exactly where she needed it to fall. She had waited eleven years for the right two men to be standing close enough together for this to finally work. She uploaded the photograph, wrote a caption short enough to travel faster than any explanation ever could, and made herself a pot of tea while Paris began, without knowing it yet, to eat the bait.
Within days, three lives that had spent thirty years circling one another without ever quite touching would collide on a single street - and an anonymous blog with excellent timing would make sure nobody missed it.
