Tony Simon was raised as a patriot. His father had served in Viet Nam and his grandfather in WWII. Both men came home in one piece. But his grandfather enjoyed a very different reception than his father received after serving in Viet Nam. Tony watched as the concept of a 'War Hero' was becoming a thing of the past.

Tony's grandfather was given a 'Hero's Welcome' in the small rural town of Marceline, Kansas. But Tony's father was not so lucky. He endured a lot of ridicule because of how the war in Viet Nam had gone. Despite all of this, Tony still felt the patriotic need to serve his nation. He viewed his upcoming service in Afghanistan as a way to turn things around. Maybe?

Then while 'on patrol' with his unit their Humvee ran over an explosive device. Everyone inside was killed instantly by the blast, with the exception of Tony. He was told later that he was the lucky one. He had lost his foot, and most of his hearing. And yes... initially he was grateful to be alive! But... the lucky one?

Tony didn't view things in such a positive manner, all things considered, especially when he returned home only to be confined to a wheelchair. He didn't consider himself... Too Lucky. Life was very difficult now.

The government provided medical care, and a small monthly stipend yes... but the handicap... remained a hardship.
