The first life-altering domino in Reverend Dan Markham's troubled life fell ten years ago when he opened Maureen's letter while in college studying pre-Med. Without explanation, Maureen broke off their engagement and soon married an older man. After an attempted suicide and an encounter with Jesus at the end of a bright tunnel, Dan entered the ministry to find a rock to hold onto. Now, realizing that it was only his own voice calling him, Dan wants to leave the ministry; his prayers are one-way. He believes God has abandoned him. He also realizes that marrying Carol on the rebound has backfired as well: his unrequited love for Maureen has not diminished. Now that Carol's Christian veneer has worn thin, she threatens divorce, demanding that Dan leave the slums of South Boston where he is a Chaplain at a charity hospital and return to their home-town church as its pastor. As a child of poverty, his old socially-unconscious, wealthy church is anathema to him. Worse, he cannot admit to Carol that moving back home to save their marriage may destroy it when he is forced out of his humid dream world to face Maureen in the real one. As he struggles to preserve his marriage, Dan finds himself locked in a battle against the domineering president of his congregation who wants to save a dilapidated covered bridge that causes his old neighborhood to flood each spring. These struggles allow Dan to understand that he had never been abandoned by God. His faith is restored after he learns that sacrificial love was behind Maureen's decision to break off their engagement. And he finds redemption in the knowledge that it was God who led his congregation to dismantle the bridge and destroy the evil it represented.
