It's a rainy night in the fall of 1971. Laura is running from a life she never chose. Driving through the hills of northern California, she sees a man hitching without hope in the rain. Impulsively, she stops to pick him up. He is Cal, an emotionally shattered Vietnam War veteran running from the horror of his own weakness and complicity in the war. Both are running, but Laura hopes to run to something while Cal can only run away.
Together, they drive halfway across the country to Cal's family home in a small town on the Kansas Oklahoma border. Cal is estranged from his broken family and returns only to say goodbye to his dying mother. Thrust into the bitter divisions of the family, Laura discovers who she is and what she wants. She wants Cal, the whole man, not the empty shell spit out by the war. For that, she must heal Cal and his family and so fulfill his mother's dying wish.
