Darren Curtis reflects back on the summer of 1983, when a local murder uncovers the darker side of his suburban neighborhood and a new paper route introduces the freedom and responsibilities of adulthood. A naïve Darren quickly learns that independence means tough choices with real consequences as he's exposed to aggressive girls, illegal drugs, and criminal rings. The Route is a story about growing up as Generation-X. Determined to survive, but ill-equipped for adulthood, Gen-X came of age during an exciting time in American history. The Cold War dominated the political culture; MTV and AIDS fought for the popular culture; and sex was everywhere, propelled by music and fashion. Advances in technology and communications were making the world smaller, but hadn't yet converged to steal the innocence of youth.
