What does freedom mean after the prison doors have opened?
Romania Beyond the Past is a powerful philosophical and political essay on communism, post-communist disillusionment, and the difficult passage from servitude to freedom.
Mihai Gheorghiu begins from Romania's traumatic twentieth-century experience and from the unfulfilled promise of December 1989. The fall of communism, he argues, did not automatically create free people, free institutions, or a truly free society. Political liberation may open the door, but inner liberation, moral responsibility, and the recovery of historical memory remain far more difficult tasks.
This is not a conventional history of Romania. It is an essay of witness, conscience, and interrogation. Gheorghiu writes about fear, obedience, humiliation, solidarity, nihilism, the loss of memory, and the spiritual roots of human dignity. For him, servitude is not only a political condition imposed by totalitarian power; it is also an inner condition, a way in which individuals and nations may forget their own freedom.
At the same time, the book speaks far beyond Romania. It addresses a question that remains urgent in every society: how can human beings preserve their dignity when ideology, bureaucracy, propaganda, consumerism, or technological power threaten to reduce them to objects?
With intellectual intensity and moral passion, Romania Beyond the Past examines the wounds left by communism, the illusions of transition, the fragility of national identity, and the possibility of rebuilding a country through truth, memory, faith, responsibility, and hope.
Including an afterword by Vianu Mureșan, this volume is essential reading for those interested in Eastern Europe, totalitarianism, political philosophy, Christianity and modernity, the legacy of communism, and the enduring struggle for freedom.
A book for readers who believe that the past is never truly past-and that freedom, once betrayed, must be won again.
