In Rite of Passage: Escaping the Past, thirteen-year-old Tola Matthews faces the ultimate test of courage, faith, and identity. It is 1988 in the fictional African nation of Ilanga, and Tola must journey from the city of Lobani back to his ancestral village of Dlambona to complete the traditional circumcision rite of manhood. But when his father mysteriously disappears during the trip, Tola must walk alone through wild grasslands-facing betrayal, danger, and unexpected friendship across tribal lines.
Along the way, he meets the fierce and skilled Yoliswa, the wounded stranger Bakwe, and the proud warrior Tsidi of the rival Gamba tribe. Each encounter challenges what Tola believes about manhood, forgiveness, and faith. When an ancient stick-fighting tournament forces him to face fear and prejudice head-on, Tola learns that becoming a man means more than enduring pain-it means leading with integrity, compassion, and courage.
Rite of Passage: Escaping the Past is a powerful coming-of-age African adventure filled with action, family bonds, cultural tradition, and Christian values. Fans of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Treasure Island, and A Long Walk to Water will be inspired by Tola's resilience and moral strength. This third instalment in the Tola Matthews Adventure Series blends faith, danger, and self-discovery into an unforgettable journey that reminds readers that manhood is not about strength-it's about heart.
