The concept of the utility or satisfaction that an article gives its consumer first found a key place in the study of economics between the years 1871 and 1889. Its introduction marked a radical change in the viewpoint of economists. Although earlier economists had not wholly ignored utility, they had not used it effectively because genearlly they had not regarded it from a convenient point of view.
