This is a story about the past, specifically the 1950's, 1960's, and the 1970's. It's about the events that occurred in those years as they were recorded in the mind of a boy who was born and grew up in that time.
It's about 'Eisenhower Babies', children of the baby boom, a now aging and dying generation born after World War II, a generation of children who were given ....everything.
Or, at least that is what children born of that time were told.
The dreams and fantasies 'boomers' believed were real also play a part in what follows.
It's not a story cataloging earth-shaking calamities in well-known cities where calamities are so often scripted. New York and Los Angeles are quite safe. No aliens disintegrate the Empire State building. Zombies do not eat anyone.
Almost all the action takes place in a sheltered and sleepy Midwestern city most people know nothing about.
There are heroes, and villains, and tragedy. There are also terrible acts of betrayal, unspeakable acts of cruelty, unforgivable acts of violation ....and people die horribly.
Mostly, though, it's a story of two children growing up in a time of plenty, who see promises of a better future crumble. They find the world into which they are born is not as safe, reassuring, and hopeful as appearances made it out to be.
It is especially a story of the love of the boy's life and how he lost her.
Perhaps, it is also a story of how all Eisenhower Babies lost that which they most wanted.
