The umma is receiving attention, but not always of the right kind. It is blamed, for instance, for the 9/11 attacks. There is Islamophobia. Even though Muslims were not responsible for the 9/11 tragedy, Islam was politicized. For in the past, prodded by Islamists, parts of the umma went on a rampage, a warpath against the rest of humanity. Islamists were propelled by the teaching of the war between the dar al-Islam and the dar al-harb, an early variant of the clash of civilizations perspective, to propagate Islam by force. But aggression provoked retaliation. The propagation of Islam through the use of force - jihad al-talab - is prohibited. But hawkish ulama justified wars of aggression, in a brazen defiance of the teaching of reconciliation in revelation, by recourse to weaponized jurisprudence. Their jurisprudence was erected on premises that brazenly contradict the Book of Allah. It rests on recourse to the alleged abrogation of all verses of reconciliation, one of the biggest shenanigans ever perpetrated in jurisprudence. The justification of wars of aggression also rests on the treatment of tradition as revelation, the repression of reason, the treatment of tradition as judge of revelation and the treatment of jihad al-talab as a sixth pillar of Islam. The treatment of tradition as revelation treats tradition as a part of and partner of revelation. This is an expression of shirk. The treatment of tradition as a judge of revelation was a further expression of shirk, as it subordinated revelation to tradition. The repression of reason subordinated reason to tradition. The abrogation of the verses of reconciliation furnished rulers with a justification of waging unlawful wars of aggression. It justified empire-building and the perpetration of war crimes under the auspices of Islam. The abrogation of all verses of reconciliation transformed the teaching of reconciliation into a religion of war. It treated as lawful what Allah prohibited. Islamism treats jihad al-talab as the sixth pillar of Islam. Jihad al-talab requires waging war against non-Muslims every year, even when they are neutral. In expecting the umma to reject the abrogated verses, militant ulama expect the umma to perpetrate kufr. For recourse to the teaching of abrogation requires the rejection of all allegedly abrogated verses, including verses that teach mercy, forgiveness and reconciliation. The transformation of Islam into Islamism was buttressed by recourse to the tradition in which the prophet reportedly asserted that the blood of the kafir is halal for Muslims. The Book of Allah prohibits the use of force in the propagation of religion. It also prohibits wars of aggression. For wars of aggression entail the perpetration of war crimes. But hawkish jurists treat jihad al-talab as a requirement of the faith. In this, they corrupted the knowledge of revelation. The turn from revelation to tradition and the treatment of tradition as revelation corrupted the knowledge of the Book of Allah. Transmitters became authorities able to abrogate and replace parts of revelation. This transpired with the revealed rulings on apostasy and adultery. The ulama replaced the rulings on these transgressions with punishments derived from traditions. In this, they perpetrated juristic shirk. The rearticulation of the teaching of revelation prepared the road for the advent of despotism as the preferred modus operandi. By embracing and practicing jihad al-talab, the ruling elites exposed the umma to the risk of retaliation by aggrieved parties. For Allah teaches that He never changes the state of people until they first change what is in themselves. Authoritarianism was enforced by recourse to the law of apostasy. The verse according to which there is no compulsion in religion was treated as abrogated. The alleged abrogation of the verses of reconciliation by the verses of the sword enabled hawkish jurists to reinvent Islam as a religion of war.
