William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) was a Canadian lawyer, economist, university professor, civil servant, journalist, and politician. In 1900, he became Canada's first Deputy Minister of Labour. He served as the tenth Prime Minister of Canada from 1921 to June 28, 1926; September 25, 1926, to 1930; and from 1935 to 1948. With over 21 years in the office, he was the longest serving Prime Minister in British Commonwealth history. He is commonly known either by his full name or as Mackenzie King. King earned five university degrees. He obtained three from the University of Toronto: B.A. in 1895, LL. B. in 1896 and M. A. in 1897. During his studies there, he worked as a newspaper reporter for the Toronto Globe. After studying at the University of Chicago, he proceeded to Harvard University, receiving an M. A. in political economy in 1898. King also taught economics at Harvard. In 1918, King published Industry and Humanity: A Study in the Principles Underlying Industrial Reconstruction. He maintained writing his diaries from 1893 until his death in 1950.
