In Remnants, Piet De Waal, a former apartheid-era military intelligence operative, returns to his hometown of Kimberley in 2005. He has spent over a decade living a quiet, anonymous life, haunted by a past he tried to outrun. His return is prompted by a lucrative contract, but a newspaper headline about a resurfacing arms deal commission and the name of his old commanding officer, Colonel André Bekker, forces him to confront the buried secrets of his past.
Piet carries a briefcase containing a secret dossier-a testament to his cowardice and a promise he failed to keep to his deceased lover, Naledi Masemola. Naledi was a journalist and activist who was trying to expose Bekker's corruption and illegal arms deals. Piet's love for her, and his subsequent silence, led to her death in a staged car crash in 1994, which was made to look like an accident. Piet had been given an alibi and told to keep silent. He is now a ghost, living with the knowledge that his silence allowed the rot to fester.
Summoned by a text message from a journalist named Thandi Mokoena, Piet meets her at the Big Hole Museum. He discovers that Thandi is Naledi's niece, and she has come to him for answers. Piet and Thandi become embroiled in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game against Bekker and his brutal enforcer, Frik Vermaak. They are on the run, with the briefcase containing the evidence of Bekker's crimes as their only weapon. The story follows their desperate bid to get the truth out to the public and bring down Bekker's empire, even if it means facing the ghosts of their past and the very real threat of death. The war, which Piet thought was over, is just beginning, and this time he is fighting for the truth and for a ghost.
