Written in prose both muscular and lyrical, Red Otter is an unforgettable tale of love and revenge. Driven by hate for the Lakota who killed his white family and make war on the Crow, the people he has come to love, Red Otter emerges into manhood as a ruthless warrior who has no mercy for his enemies. To the Lakota, Red Otter is a nightmare. To the Crow, Red Otter is a hero. On the Northern Great Plains, Red Otter is a legend.

Red Otter presents a moving portrayal of the vanished horse culture of the Great Plains, a glimpse into a vanished way of life, and in the wild action of the final pages, as the Lakota and Cheyenne swarm over Custer and the men of the Seventh Cavalry, Red Otter delivers a riveting portrayal of the Last Stand. On a grassy hillside in Montana Territory, Red Otter fights for everything he loves, and in the midst of chaos and death he recognizes the massacre for what it is: the first step in the final destruction of his blood enemies, the Lakota and Cheyenne.
