A retired war hero is found murdered on the front lawn of his property. Cawley Jenkins, a disabled vet, and owner of the local paper investigates the crime at the request of his friend, the chief of police. The D.A. steps in and takes the investigation away from them. It's a tight election year, and the D.A. gives the investigation to the sheriff, who is also up for reelection.
