Benny Blaze is always ready for something faster, higher, and more exciting, so when Smoke the Green Dragon's enchanted green smoke carries him into a mountain kingdom filled with racing carts, thunderclouds, and roads carved across the sky, he knows exactly what he wants to do. The Great Thunder Run is about to begin, and Benny is determined to enter, even if his only choice is a battered wooden cart with crooked wings and a very grumpy lightning bug for an engine.

Soon Benny and Smoke are bouncing through hailstone caves, roaring through thunder tunnels, and fighting their way across a canyon where the wind keeps changing direction. Smoke's magical green smoke helps keep the old cart moving, although one little mistake leaves it with enormous bouncing wheels that make the wild race even stranger. Against every expectation, Benny begins climbing toward the front.

Then the race suddenly becomes much more dangerous. Someone has stolen the magical storm crystals that keep the other carts in the air, and racers begin falling from the sky while the thief speeds toward the summit. Benny finally has the lead he wanted so badly, but will he keep racing for the finish or turn back when everyone else needs his help?
