A Quieter Kind of Cowboy is the seventh children's book from @Josh_Harris_Illustration. Like his previous works, this colourful rhyming story explores an important part of growing up, this time focusing on understanding and accepting people who experience the world differently. Through kindness, friendship, and empathy, the story encourages children to appreciate that there is no single right way to have fun, make friends, or feel comfortable.
This book follows Dusty, a cheerful young cowboy who loves excitement, adventure, and busy town fairs. When he meets Sam, a quiet boy who prefers peaceful places to noisy crowds, Dusty is surprised to discover that not everyone enjoys the same things. As the two spend the day together, Dusty learns an important lesson about making room for others to be themselves.
Dusty's story was written by Josh in 2026 and was inspired by his studies in Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as his experiences meeting people with different personalities, preferences, and ways of engaging with the world. The story aims to help children understand that being quiet is not something that needs fixing, and that everyone deserves to feel accepted for who they are.
As Josh continues his journey towards becoming a counsellor, he hopes this book can help children develop empathy, celebrate individuality, and better understand both themselves and those around them.
