A Quarrel of Expats is the second book in the Detective Inspector Asoka murder mysteries. It is a police procedural, (cosy crime) murder mystery, set in the fictional Sri Lankan tourist resort of Puluwala.
While accompanying his diplomat parents on their travels, his early life was immersed in Western culture and countries. That exposure enabled DI Asoka of the Sri Lankan police force to be uniquely skilled in the culture and language of Westerners. Outwardly, he should be the ideal Senior Investigating Officer of tourist-related crimes.
Unfortunately, DI Asoka's mixed reputation precedes him. His superiors groan at his off-the-wall investigation methods and take-no-prisoners approach to suspects, irrespective of rank and status. His peers view him with a mixture of awe and frustration. And his suspects, well, let's put it mildly, have no reason to like his behaviour.
Just as his family are making progress in forcing him to face his metaphorical PTSD demons, he is again pulled away to investigate the death of a visiting foreign national.
Supported by Sergeant Nalaka, Asoka has to break open the lies and deception of the (mostly) British suspects.
