这本书的契机和素材来源于坐落在上海巨鹿路158号大同坊B1层一个叫活著的酒馆里。有些隐蔽，它是一个多元的共享空间，代表每个会员的标志是一个棺材造型的银制指环，说到这儿也许你会联想到美国具有雄辩俱乐部之称的骷髅会，它们之间的一点共通之处即带有一点神秘色彩的辩论。它的会员们有一个专属的入门密码，实现了真正的空间共享。白天，会员可以在这里读书、会客、创作、畅聊等；夜晚，它却化身为哲学辩论酒馆，吧台后摆放着满架来自于世界各地的威士忌，也可以将它理解为专业的威士忌酒馆，黑板墙上凌乱温热的字迹，是刚刚进行的那场辩论留下的观点。2018年始，来自于社会各领域人士，每周一期，一年时间共同进行了52期辩论，议题也是从生活到艺术到人性到美学到生与死的终极意义等诸多方面的探讨，现将每期议题仔细整理、编辑、校对出书，由于篇幅和个人风格、水平、层次一些因素的差异，偏口语化，以至于后期编辑做了不同程度的删减，便于理解和阅读。也算是酒馆对于过去一年每一场辩论的一个如实记录和总结。
