Das Buch liefert mit einer Übersetzung des Menon eine fortlaufende Kommentierung dieses Dialogs. Dabei wird auf die Analyse der Argumente ebenso Wert gelegt wie auf die Beachtung literarischer Aspekte, die vermuten lassen, dass Platon dieses Werk für eine Zuhörerschaft in Sizilien verfasst hat. Zusammen mit den an die Komödie erinnernden Elementen ergibt sich daraus ein neues Verständnis bestimmter philosophischer Positionen, die dem Menon zugeschrieben werden.
Aus der Sicht des Autors Platon ist es das Ziel dieses Dialoges, einem sizilischen Publikum Sokrates als einen Meister der dialektischen Untersuchung nahezubringen:
- Im ersten Teil des Dialoges wird am Beispiel der Definition von Figur deutlich gemacht, dass eine korrekte (lexikalische) Definition jedenfalls die Koextensivität von Definiendum und Definiens garantieren muss.
- In einem Mittelstück wird Menon (und der Leser) über den Nutzen der Erkenntnis des eigenen Nichtwissens aufgeklärt.
- Im Schlussteil des Dialoges erweist sich Sokrates als jemand, der souverän mit dem Verfahren der Untersuchung im Ausgang von einer Voraussetzung aus umgehen kann.
Sowohl historisch wie philosophisch interessierte Leser werden aus dieser Deutung des Menon neue Erkenntnisse gewinnen können.
